Dialog Telekom PLC, under their cooperate responsibility initiatives, donated the Ratmalana Audiology Centre to the Ceylon School for the Deaf and Blind on Wednesday, with state of the art technology for treating, testing and detecting hearing impairments in children and adults.
Dr.Ruberu, Consultant ENT Surgeon, stated at the discussion that awareness for such situations is very low in the country. 8% of the population suffers from all types of hearing impairments. “Deafness causes a huge amount of isolation,” said Dr.Ruberu, adding that the Audiology Centre has breakthrough technology to diagnose, investigate and plan cockle implants.
Thilini Amarasinghe, Audiologist for the Centre said that the Centre has 13 types of tests for diagnosing hearing impairments in adults, children and infants. Patients from all over the country can visit the Centre, whereas other patients have to go through government clinics. She also mentioned that this was the first fully equipped Audiology Centre, after the Health Care Units of Sri Lanka.
”Autism, a developmental disorder which has been poorly addressed in Sri Lanka, can also be treated here,” said Mr. Buddhima Samaraweera, Speech and Language Pathologist for the Centre. Any profit received by the Centre is used for the development of the Centre and the School.
