How long does it take?

A mother carries the baby in her womb before she gives birth and it takes nine months for this sweet miracle. We are so jubilant and relieved now that the war is over and the terrorists are killed, but it took us nearly three decades to complete this victory. Such is any phenomena, where it takes a certain period of time to complete, some short and others longer. So exactly how long does it take to rebuild and fulfill our dreams of a New Sri Lanka?

Everybody has an answer to this question depending on their resolution to rebuild our nation. The government has a road map to achieve this and it lists down activities for the coming years. The opposition and other parties have their proposals with an agenda that runs over many years. If you ask their experts why it takes so long, the common answer is that the war has destroyed the infrastructure of these areas and it takes a long time to set them up again. These areas are still not completely safe to travel because they have land mines and so on. Fair enough that these claims have their validity and it does take long years to get the infrastructure ready. But is this the real thing? Can these buildings, towers, roads, accessories and other commodities rebuild our dream land?

The war didn’t only destroy the physical structure and the natural settings of our nation. Because if so, by regaining the materialistic wealth and prosperity, we can claim to have fulfilled this dream. But no! The war damaged and destroyed far more than what we could see and touch. It killed the inner peace of our nation. People lost their hopes and dreams. The morals were let down and the spirits were divided. More than the physical structure, the inner spiritual base was shattered. Will it take years to rebuild that?

In a more practical sense, it is not possible for every person to travel north or east to give physical support. With these economic conditions it may even not be possible for everyone to make a monetary contribution as well. But a kind word or a caring thought can go further than all such limitations. Just with a switch in our attitude we can change the whole atmosphere and the vibe of our nation. After all, it is each and every living individual put together which makes this nation. So be kind to your neighbor, support your colleagues, smile at strangers and encourage every idea to make any one thing better than what it is today. Have faith and believe that you can be that drop which creates the ripple effect to pass this positive feeling. It is the vibrant spirit we all need of a nation rebuilding, of a dream Sri Lanka! So how long does it take? Only a moment of thought and the rest will simply follow.
